Abstract

The purpose of the current meta-analytic study was to synthesize the results of studies on theeffects of multicultural education program on Korean children's multicultural competences.Using the authors' own selection criteria, 36 studies were finally selected and used for the metaanalysis, and 50 effect sizes were calculated from these studies. The grand mean effect sizesunder the fixed-effect model and the random-effect model were 1.255 and 1.406, respectively. The magnitudes of the grand mean effect sizes indicated the overall effects of multiculturaleducation program reported in the past studies are effective. To identify possible moderatorsthat can explain extra variances among the individual effect sizes, a meta-regression wasperformed with four moderators of age level of the participating children, types of effectmeasures, types of research design, and the number of weeks used for the implementation ofthe programs. The results showed that the age level of the participating children had astatistically significant moderating effect. To examine further the moderators contributing to thedistinct mean effects sizes of different age levels, two separate meta-regression analyses wereconducted for each of the two age-level groups. The results of the meta-regression analysesshowed that the types of effect measures had a statistically significant moderating effect both inthe two groups, but the patterns and the relative magnitudes of mean effect sizes for differenttypes of effect measures varied on the two age-level groups. Based upon the findings of themeta analysis, the effects of multicultural education programs in Korea were discussed, andsome suggestions for future studies on the effects of multicultural education programs weremade.
