A Needs Analysis of Teacher Competencies for SMART Education

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the educational needs of teacher competencies for implementingSMART education. In order to achieve the research goal, a survey study was conducted tomeasure teacher competencies at elementary, middle and high school levels. The measurementtool was adapted from existing studies relevant to the teacher competencies for SMARTeducation. The tool includes 61 items on a 6-point Likert scale, measuring current performanceand perceived importance as well. The Borich formula was employed for data analysis. Theresults indicate that the educational needs of competencies on collaborative relationshipbuilding with community, evaluation and reflection, instructional design and development,contents expertise, and technology literacy were ranked within top five. Specifically,collaborative relationship building with community, evaluation and reflection, and instructionaldesign and development were highly ranked as common competencies across all of theelementary, middle and high school levels, and also across all regions. The results of thisstudy provide practical implications for designing educational programs for enhancing teachercompetencies in successful implementation of the SMART education.
