The Effects of Semantic Elaboration Tasks on EFL Vocabulary Learning*

Abstract

This study examined the effects of semantic elaboration tasks on L2 vocabulary learningin word recall and retention in the context of EFL classroom. Fifty four Korean EFLlearners attempted to learn 16 target words. Three types of processing tasks for semanticelaboration were used for learning vocabulary: One group conducted a task with definitionplus L1 equivalent gloss, another with a usage example, and the other with cloze activityfilling a blank in a given sentence. A pretest was given for selecting target words beforethe classroom activities and two posttests were constructed for the final data. Mean scoreswere compared to determine the effect of three types of tasks on word recall and retention.The results showed that overall, ‘CZ’ task modification filling the blank in a sentence levelwas most helpful for immediate receptive word recall as well as for receptive andproductive word retention in a delayed test. This most positive effect was shown in thepercentage of retention in productive word memory between immediate word recall andword retention a week after delayed posttest, which was except for receptive wordmemory.
